World Series Stakes are Now at an All-Time High, Thanks to the Cubs and Indians World Series

World Series Stakes are Now at an All-Time High, Thanks to the Cubs and Indians World Series

For those not living in the 216 area who seem to have forgotten, there exist another fan base - one who haven't witnessed their team creating history as Series winners in generations. In case you still haven't guessed, this team is the Indians, the American League’s counterparts of the Cubs. While the former won their last World Series in 1908, back when Teddy Roosevelt was the President, the last won the coveted distinction back in 1948 under Truman's leadership. And that makes it all the more exciting to see what happens when the two teams come face-to-face for the 112th edition (8 p.m., Tuesday, Eastern time, Fox). A 174 year combined drought, this game has raised the stakes to an all-time high and has sent the world of online sports betting into a tizzy.

An event in itself, this game will give one team's fan-base a chance to see history, while the other will have to suffer anguish - for another year at the very least.

Mike Napoli, the Indians' DH said that this is something he always wanted this match to happen. Saying that it will be nothing short of history being created to see two teams with considerable history being on the field playing against each other.

Among the two teams, however, it is the Indians who have more experience in the Series in recent years. In the 1997 edition, the Indians played against the Florida Marlins, but lost. Before this was their six game loss in 1995 against the Atlanta Braves. And then of course, before this was their decisive 1954 match versus the Giants. The Cubs, on the other hand, last went to the finals in 1945.

This game will see players Jason Heyward, Dexter Fowler, and Addison Russell making history, being the first blacks to play for the cubs in the annual championship Series of the MLB. According to Hall of Fame member and well-loved Cub player Ryne Sandberg, this event stands to soothe the pains of the failures suffered by the team. He added, however, that the series could have been more interesting had Cleveland not won any championship.

This is not the first time, however, that such a thing has happened. In 2005, the White Sox won in Chicago, and the Bulls won 6 NBA titles in the city from 1991-98. Additionally, six Stanley Cups were bagged by the Blackhawks here and the Bears had won the Super Bowl championship in 1985.

Napoli says that it would be wonderful to see this win happening here, adding that his friends told him that the city would go bananas in the event they win the championship. Which begs the question - would downtown Cleveland's Euclid Avenue actually be seen by over two million fans, or a three million strong fan-base actually watch a parade in Chicago's Michigan Avenue?

Well, stranger things have happened in the Series. For instance, in 2011, Terry Francona, manager for the Cleveland team, resigned from his 8 year Red Sox stint. Only 3 weeks after that, his superior Theo Epstein left the team to lead the Cubs' baseball operations. Recalling their eight-year stint, the both Maddon and Francona had applied for managerial vacancy the Red Sox team in 2004. Francona, who bagged the job, soon took them to their first championship victory in 86 years, then repeated the same in 2007. On the flip side, while Maddon ended up leading the Tampa Ray Bays in the 2008 championships in Tampa bay, though he is yet to find his first ring. Comparing the two players, Epstein said that while he liked Maddon a lot, he decided that his uniqueness could prove to be a deterring factor, and hired Francona who had extensive experience managing in the leagues instead.
