Ginsburg Calls for Change to the Electoral College

In response to a question about which values held by the Founding Fathers must change and which must remain, Ginsburg suggested that the electoral college should be eliminated while lauding the Freedom of the Press Clause and the Equal Protection Clause, which was implemented as part of the 14th Amendment in 1868.

Asked about several other topics, Ginburg said that if she were "queen", she would abolish the death penalty nationwide.

What makes for a meaningful life? I went to class about 8:30 a.m., and I came home at 4:00 p.m., that was children's hour.

Ginsburg has often spoken of the "collegiality" of the Supreme Court, reminding the audience on Monday that although the members of the court have deep ideological differences, they work together and share mutual respect.

The 83-year-old justice offered personal reflections at a discussion billed as an exploration of what it means to lead a meaningful life.

Last year, GOP senators blocked former President Barack Obama's nominee, Merrick Garland, to replace the late Justice Antonin Scalia in order to ensure a conservative justice. Something to fix tears in your community, something to make life a little better for those less fortunate than you.

"Hearing her speak reminded me that for women to achieve we must be poised yet ballsy - caring yet rational - and, most importantly, incessantly, pedantically convinced that whatever we want to achieve can be done", Alegria Ruseler-Smith '20 said.

"I think today he wouldn't touch me with a 10-foot pole", she joked.

Ginsburg is the leader of the court's liberal wing.

Ginsburg said that even though she was nominated to the Supreme Court with bipartisan support in 1993, the political conversation has deteriorated since then to the point where people are no longer focused on serving the country.

Ginsburg said, "There are some things I would like to change, one is the Electoral College".

"The attitude is I'm going to surmount this whatever it is", she said.

On Saturday, according to a news release from UH, Justice Ginsburg will also visit with students from the state's "Courts in the Community" program at Mililani High School.
