Gov. Greitens signs bill making Missouri 28th right-to-work state

Gov. Greitens signs bill making Missouri 28th right-to-work state

Several business-friendly organizations applauded Greitens' quick action on signing the right-to-work legislation, which supporters say will help bring jobs to Missouri.

Greitens said the new law won't eliminate unions but instead will make them more responsive and accountable to their members. Iowa enacted its Right-to-Work law in 1947.

MU Medical School expansions in Columbia and Springfield would not receive state funding in the 2018 fiscal year under Gov. Eric Greitens' current budget proposal.

Greitens did not take questions at the Jefferson City signing.

Right-to-work says that a person can not be required to join or refrain from joining a labor organization, as a condition of employment. Right-to-work laws allow workers to opt out of paying those dues. They say that without adequate union representation, wages will fall and workers will lose out on potential benefits. Former Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon vetoed a right-to-work bill in June 2015. Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin and West Virginia have passed similar legislation in the last five years, in addition to Kentucky and now Missouri.

No state can compel workers to join a union, but in states without right-to-work protections, non-union employees can be compelled to pay union dues, regardless of their status as a non-union member. "It changes the narrative about Missouri and the Missouri Chamber is optimistic about where we are heading". While he personally backs it, Schmidt voiced doubts about the bill's passage, saying it could come down to one or two votes.

"Missouri is on a path that is risky to the well-being of working families and our neighborhoods as a whole, and for what?"

Missouri's governor is wasting no time in putting his pro-life words into practice. "The St. Louis-Kansas City Carpenters Regional Council will continue to fight for Missouri's working families".

Greitens also has signing ceremonies scheduled Monday in Poplar Bluff and Jefferson City.

"Right-to-work states, like SC, have seen first-hand that job creation and economic growth comes from expanded freedoms".

Greitens promised during his campaign to make Missouri a right-to-work state.
