Five injured in Circus Sarasota highwire fall

Five circus performers under the direction of world famous high-wire performer Nik Wallenda were injured Wednesday when they fell 25 feet to the ground during a practice session in Sarasota, Florida.

Circus Sarasota co-founder and director Pedro Reis also highlighted the "new tricks in the routine" by simply saying "it will leave people breathless". The performers were practicing a "human pyramid" act when they lost their balance.

Sarasota County fire Chief Michael Regnier said one patient was taken to Blake Medical Center in Bradenton, which has a trauma center, and another performer was taken to Lakewood Ranch Medical Center, also in Bradenton.

"I will tell you that the show must go on".

Wallenda, the self-proclaimed "King of the High Wire", is part of the seventh generation of the famed Flying Wallenda family of acrobats.

The accident happened around 12:43 p.m.

"We had a awful accident here today", Reis said.

"We will go to Plan B, obviously, and come up with a finish", he said.

Another member of the Wallenda family, Rick Wallenda, is scheduled to perform a high-wire walk for charity on Saturday at St. Petersburg's Sundial this weekend. "He was the anchor at the back of the pyramid".
