RFK's Son Chris Kennedy Says He Running For Illinois Governor

CHICAGO-Democrat Chris Kennedy, the son of the late Sen.

Former Board of Trustees chairman Chris Kennedy announced he is running for governor today under the Democratic ticket for 2018.

Chris Kennedy, 53, who ran the Merchandise Mart and is developing Wolf Point along the Chicago River, said he was running to "restore the economy" of IL.

Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner has not said whether he plans to seek re-election, but is widely expected to run.

Kennedy first emerged as a gubernatorial challenger after addressing the IL delegation of the Democratic National Convention past year. In an email and video sent to supporters, he talked up history of service and said he wants to "restore the American dream to the people of this state".

Kennedy, 53 who is the son of the late Robert F. Kennedy, did not seek reappointment to serve on the Board of Trustees on January 19, 2015, ending his six-year term. "By working together to achieve results for IL families, I believe we can restore the American Dream in our state within a generation".

Rauner refuses to approve a budget unless Democrats agree to a series of reforms, including freezing property taxes, imposing legislative term limits and weakening collective bargaining rights for union members.

That drew an attack from the Illinois GOP, which has worked to link any potential rivals to Madigan, Rauner's staunchest opponent at the Illinois Capitol.

Kennedy has never run for elected office before.

In a statement, the Illinois Republican Party said Kennedy was running to do the bidding of Madigan.

Top Box is a nonprofit organization that provides affordable, healthy food to Chicago neighborhoods, the AP said, and occupies Kennedy's time outside of his work at his family's investment firm.

Kennedy may face a hard Democratic primary, however, with the AP listing Chicago alderman Ameya Pawar as another candidate.

The leader of Illinois Democrats, who has battled with Rauner, a year ago said he thought Kennedy would make an "excellent candidate". "There's bewilderment. The state needs a change".

"I'm not afraid of a billionaire", Kennedy said.
