Luis Suárez will miss Copa final and ban extended for appeal

Luis Suárez will miss Copa final and ban extended for appeal

Barcelona have risen above Real Madrid to the top of La Liga after recording a 6-0 victory over Copa del Rey final opponents Alaves on Saturday afternoon.

The Catalan's swept Alaves aside easily at Mendizorroza, with Luis Suarez scoring twice, while Neymar, Lionel Messi, an Alexis Ruano own-goal and Ivan Rakitic added the rest.

Alaves should have halved the deficit early in the second period when a wonderful cross from Ruben Sobrino found Christian Santos unmarked inside the Barcelona box, but the number nine somehow fired over the crossbar.

Alaves - who are about to play their first Copa del Rey finals in 96 years - want Athletic Bilbao's San Mames to be the host in which the stadium is just around 62 kilometers away from their Mendizorratza ground as reported by ESPN.

Alaves' only previous final was a 5-4 loss after extra-time in a thriller against Liverpool in the 2000-2001 UEFA Cup, the competition now known as the UEFA Europa League.

Four-time runners-up in the Copa, Celta were trying to return to the final for the first time since 2000-2001.

Alaves stunned Barcelona 2-1 in the Spanish league this season, handing the Catalan club its only home loss with goals by Deyverson and Ibai Gomez.

The two sides are due to meet again the Copa del Rey final on May 27. Barca are just one point behind Real Madrid and it is not so hard for them to take Alaves as they were in good form already.

The venue for the final has yet to be determined, although it will likely be played in Madrid.

As per the Mirror, the Los Blancos president said: "The Copa final can not be played at the Bernabeu because there is work going on".
