Department Of Education Misspells WEB Du Bois' Name On Twitter

Department Of Education Misspells WEB Du Bois' Name On Twitter

She called out the mistake on Twitter and queried: "Is it amusing sad or sad amusing that our Dept. of Education misspelled the name of the great W. E. B. Du Bois?"

Du Bois, not DeBois.

"Education must not simply teach work - it must teach life".

Update 11:45am CT: More than two hours after the initial tweet, the Education Department realized its mistake and sent an apology.

"Our deepest apologizes for the earlier typo", the department tweeted.

In a tweet Sunday from its official account, the department attributes a quotation to "W.E.B". He went on to co-found the NAACP, lead the Niagara Movement for civil rights and write prolifically about racism and social issues. And if there's anything that a social media manager working for the U.S. Education Department needs to keep in mind, it's keeping a queue full of clean, properly spelled, historically accurate tweets ready, lest a mistake spark widespread mockery on social media.

Before dying at the age of 95 in 1963, DuBois was a famous African American leader, writer, educator and one of the founders of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

Critics of DeVos and the Trump Administration had a field day with the flub.

Well, this isn't going to help Betsy DeVos, Trump's controversial new Education secretary, win any new fans.
