SC to pronounce Judgment in case against Sasikala on Tuesday

SC to pronounce Judgment in case against Sasikala on Tuesday

The trial court had sentenced Sasikala and her two relatives to four years imprisonment with a fine of Rs 10 crore each.

Tamil Nadu has a 234-member assembly and Sasikala looks set for a facile victory during a floor test, but an adverse court verdict can put paid to her chief ministerial ambition. The apex court, on June 7 previous year, had reserved its verdict on a batch of appeals filed by Karnataka government and others against the high court order acquitting then Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa and others in the assets case after hearing a battery of lawyers from both sides.

Mr Panneerselvam, who was thrust into limelight when he was sworn in as Chief Minister in September 2001 when late Jayalalithaa's appointment as Chief Minister was struck down by the Supreme Court, was second time lucky when he was again chosen to rule Tamil Nadu. She is doing the same now also.

The Supreme Court has convicted Sasikala in the disproportionate assets case, where she faces a prison sentence of three and a half years.

Since Jayalalithaa is dead, the case against her would be abated.

February 14, 2017 - Supreme Court convicts Sasikala Natarajan and two others in the DA case.

Meanwhile, the political deadlock in Tamil Nadu continues, and the focus remains on Golden Bay Resorts, Koovathur, where over a hundred MLAs from the AIADMK have been stationed since February 8.

Palanisamy submitted the letter of support of party MLAs, who elected him at a resort near Chennai. Party sources said Edappadi will be AIADMK's new legislature party chief, which means he is the CM candidate.

In his brief meeting with the Governor, Palaniswami presented a list of MLAs supporting his claim.

A signature campaign to turn "Veda Nilayam", the official residence of late AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa into a memorial, has elicited a huge response from party cadres and the public. "Even now she has done the same thing", said a statement issued by the Sasikala camp after her conviction. The Governor will take decision based on situation.

Rohatgi said he is sure that Tamil Nadu will have a government by this weekend. But, the BJP remains hopeful of a positive outcome during a floor test.
