Qantas passengers will soon get to use Netflix and Spotify inflight

While Foxtel, Netflix and Spotify are all paid subscription services, Qantas passengers will be offered free access both on and off the aircraft for between three days and one month after their flight.

Cape Town - Calling on all Netflix fans: Australian national carrier Qantas has announced plans to launch live video streaming for passengers, so that they'll be able to watch their favourite show in-flight!

"We know that email, online shopping and general web browsing will be popular uses when we switch on Wi-Fi", said Olivia Worth, Qantas group executive of marketing.

{loadpositionsam08} Passengers will need to sign up to subscriptions to use Netflix and Spotify on-board.

Foxtel will offer Qantas customers three days of access to live and on-demand content through its app each time they fly.

According to reports the Qantas Wi-Fi service will be delivered by United States company ViaSat, which will use the NBN's satellite service to deliver download speeds of around 12 megabits per second.

Netflix and Spotify will require customers to sign up to a subscription to enjoy the services, though Netflix will offer new customers access to their services as part of a free 30-day trial (which they now offer all non-subscribers).

"Foxtel and Netflix have huge catalogues that are expanding all the time, so there will be no shortage of entertainment on board".

Spotify will offer a 30-day free trial of its ad-free premium service. The first planes to bring the service to consumers will take off later this month, with the service rolling out to the rest of Qantas' domestic fleet by mid-2017. However, Qantas says it's looking to implement it into their global flights too.

Existing subscribers will be able to log in to their accounts and access the services during flights as they would normally.

In November 2016, Qantas installed ViaSat satellite-receiving equipment on its first 737 to be Wi-Fi enabled.
