United States ethics office: Investigate Kellyanne Conway for promoting Ivanka Trump products

In a letter to President Donald Trump's deputy counsel, OGE Director Walter Shaub Jr. said "there is strong reason to believe" Conway violated standards of conduct that prevent employees from misusing their official positions.

"Go buy Ivanka's stuff, is what I would tell you", Conway said as she discussed retailer Nordstrom dropping the line.

Conway's remarks raised alarms loud enough that Rep. Elijah Cummings of Maryland asked the House Oversight Committee to consider disciplinary actions.

Brzezinski agreed she's "not credible anymore" and reiterated her stance on Conway's invitation.

Shaub gave the White House until February 28 to respond with the findings of their investigation.

Nordstrom said it made the decision because sales had steadily declined, especially in the last half of 2016, to where carrying the line "didn't make good business sense". Conway echoed the charge on TV.

The only defense the White House has offered for Conway's promotion of Ivanka's products was that it was intended as lighthearted.

The White House advised the office that all senior White House appointees had received the requisite ethics training, and that OGE's example on misuse of position is a presidential appointee doing a commercial for a product.

Shaub added that if the administration ignores the request, the agency could then issue its own recommendation of disciplinary action. "Every time I've ever seen her on television something's askew, off or incorrect", Brzezinski said.

"Forgive us if we don't hold our breath", said Robert Weissman, president of the not-for-profit group Public Citizen.

Trump counselor Kellyanne Conway gave Ivanka Trump's clothing a rave review during an interview with the Fox network last Thursday, with the White House seal clearly visible over her left shoulder.

But the president seems busy with another ever-growing scandal, and it's not entirely clear what charges or disciplinary action may come of Conway's transgression.
