CONFIRMED: Newest Mitsubishi SUV Is Known As The Eclipse Cross

Called the Eclipse Cross, the new name could eventually translate to the Japanese auto maker's best-selling vehicle in Australia. The show, which will feature more than 700 vehicles, opens to the public January 10.

Mitsubishi has previously confirmed the new model will sit alongside the ASX compact SUV and the Outlander mid-size SUV, while not specifying whether it will be smaller or larger than either.

Mitsubishi acknowledges its earlier use of the Eclipse name on a North American market coupe sold from 1989 until 2011, adding the "Cross" designation seemingly to spare any confusion between the two. The new model highlights the Japanese vehicle maker's strategy to move away from passenger cars and towards an SUV-centric model range.

For a mainstream carmaker to remain popular, it must give customers what they want - so the new Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is an important vehicle, as the people have spoken with their wallets, and SUV crossovers are what they're after. Mitsubishi Motors forecasted last year their first annual net loss in eight years, via a report from the Financial Times. With the overwhelming demand for SUVs and crossovers, Mitsubishi Motors has shifted its focus on producing more SUVs in their lineup.
