Grammys Red Carpet Appearance by Joy Villa Gets Political

Grammys Red Carpet Appearance by Joy Villa Gets Political

Singer/songwriter Joy Villa arrived at Sunday night's Grammy Awards with a political objective.

The performer, who was not nominated at the show and was one of the first guests to arrive, initially walked the red carpet outside of Los Angeles' Staples Center in a white cape.

Ms. Villa sparked a social media firestorm after she appeared on the red carpet wearing a red-white-and-blue gown with "Make America Great Again" emblazoned on the front and "TRUMP" on the back.

It's beside the point whether Villa is legitimately a Trump devotee; what matters more is the stack of numbers that her dress debut racked up. Following the show, Villa posted about the dress on Instagram. No more being hidden, no more shame for standing on what you believe in. While some have suggested it was a publicity stunt, she has stressed that her support for Trump is genuine and that she was hoping to start a national conversation. It was previously ranked on Amazon at No. 543,202 before her Grammy appearance.

Full of starry pomp and drama as it may have been, the 59th Grammy Awards this weekend also featured its-perhaps needless-share of politics.

WND's requests for comment from Villa and two of her publicists hadn't been returned at the time of this report.

In response to her critics on Instagram, Villa wrote: "Sometimes you just gotta be free to express yourself".

Andre Soriano of La Mesa designed the controversial dress. "I love this country". I'm from the Philippine islands.

When Soriano was asked about his political beliefs, he responded by saying that he is a proud American and stated that he believes that he is an example of the American dream. I am a minority, Joy is black.

"@Joy_Villa imagine choosing to end your career before anyone even knew who you were", one user tweeted.

"There are a lot of people that are in power that really misconstrued what this country stands for", he said.
