HTC's Next VR Headset Could Be For Phones

HTC's Next VR Headset Could Be For Phones

As it has allowed many users to dive into the world of virtual reality, HTC now looks like that it is finally admitting that it is a VR company after its struggles with its smartphone business.

HTC has plans to offer a virtual reality product to complement its upcoming flagship phone, the U Ultra, CNET reports after speaking with the company's president of global sales Chia-lin Chang. It will still use a phone, but it may drop the form factor that many mobile VR headsets use.

Ultimately, HTC plans to lead the mobile market by redesigning traditional devices and paving the way forward with machine learning.

While the hardware is one part of the puzzle, so is content, and HTC is working diligently to build out the software ecosystem ahead of the launch.

However, it contributed only a small fraction to HTC's 2016 sales and failed to boost the company's bottom line since the VR business was still in the early stages, according to HTC.

Cnet speculated that the new VR product might fill the gap between affordable VR technologies that require only a simple headpiece and high-end VR systems that run on powerful PCs. Last year, smartphone-powered Gear VR sold 4.5 million units, while the Vive could sol only 400,000 units. But he did not go into further details, or whether the device would be shipping anytime soon.

HTC has posted net losses of NT$3.1 billion (US$100.49 million) or NT$3.77 per share for the fourth quarter of 2016.

Initially the focus was on PC-based devices mimicking the Oculus Rift, but now with the Samsung Gear VR and Google Daydream View, there are many headsets based around pairing with a phone; with the handset docking in front of the viewer's eyes.

Having split off its virtual reality business into its own separate entity previous year, HTC is making a big drive for virtual reality in 2017. That's not all, even the company's revenue has been lowered by 14 percent.
