NC State fires head basketball coach Mark Gottfried

NC State fires head basketball coach Mark Gottfried

Less than 24 hours after a 24-point loss to North Carolina, North Carolina State has confirmed that head men's basketball coach Mark Gottfried will not return next season.

Gottfried is now 122-82 in his time with the Wolfpack.

Now in his sixth season, Gottfried led State to four NCAA Tournament appearances and two Sweet 16s.

Gottfried is in his sixth season with N.C. State and is 122-82 with a 47-55 mark in ACC play.

Roy Williams has an overall record of 27-3 against North Carolina State as the UNC head coach and a 10-2 record against Gottfried.

Gottfried's tenure in Raleigh will end after six seasons.

Gottfried made the tournament in his first four seasons at NC State before missing the postseason entirely past year during a 16-17 season.

"Mark and I met today to discuss the future direction of our program", Yow said in a release.

He will coach the final four regular-season games and the ACC tournament, according to N.C. State athletic director Debbie Yow.

"It has been a privilege to serve as head coach of NC State, and I'm proud of what we have accomplished during my time here", Gottfried said.

Reports surfaced earlier in the week that Yow was considering a coaching change.

The move comes at the back end of a godawful campaign for the Wolfpack, which is now in 14-13 overall, 3-11 in the ACC, and losers of their last six games by an average 19.2 points. Since upsetting Duke on January 23, the Wolfpack have dropped six straight. NC State also suffered a 88-58 loss to Wake Forest on Saturday, and during the game, Smith took himself out of the game and forward BeeJay Anya threatened to fight. He's expected to be a lottery pick in this year's NBA Draft.
