Supreme Court Nominee Meets with US Senator Bob Casey

Senate Judiciary chair Chuck Grassley has announced that Supreme Court nomination hearings in the Senate for Neil Gorsuch will start on Monday, March 20 and last three or four days.

President Donald Trump speaks in the East Room of the White House in Washington, Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2017, to announce Judge Neil Gorsuch as his nominee for the Supreme Court.

He explained that Gorsuch "presents himself very, very well", adding that he is not sure whether he will vote for the judge but needs to study the nominee's past rulings further.

But some Republicans are already predicting that Gorsuch will get confirmed. "He's displayed independence", Grassley said in a statement. The committee will then vote on the nomination, and it will move to the Senate floor.

Republicans are largely signaling confidence that Trump's pick to fill the vacancy created by the death of Justice Antonin Scalia will see a smooth confirmation given his legal record and his unanimous confirmation to the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals.

Several have met with him privately and said they will give him a chance to make his case.

Republicans will likely need the support of 60 of the Senate's 100 members to move to a confirmation vote on Gorsuch, and with a 52-48 majority, they'll need at least eight Democrats to support the jurist.

Republicans are also hoping that the pressure on moderate Senate Democrats up for re-election in 2018 - of which Casey is one - will tip votes in the judge's favor.

Some Senate Democrats have vowed to oppose his nomination in part because of how Senate Republicans treated Judge Merrick Garland, the nominee put forward past year by former President Barack Obama.
