Twitter to add safety features to allow users to mute offensive content

Previously, another user (or users) would have to flag an account or Tweet in order for Twitter to see it and consider taking action. Twitter gives you the option to specify how long you want content to be muted from one day, to a week, month, or even indefinitely.

Twitter is also rolling out new filtering options for your notifications to allow for more control over what they you see from specific types of accounts.

Today, Twitter's VP of engineering Ed Ho announced another safety-oriented update that builds upon Twitter's previous efforts. Alongside that, users will soon be able to banish notifications from "egg" accounts that have no profile picture, and ones that lack a phone number or have an unverified email address. "Now, more than ever, we are deeply passionate about Twitter's role in amplifying voices from every corner of the globe".

Reassuring users of the company's good intention to crackdown on accounts found guilty of violating its policy; Twitter said its job will be thorough.

"We're learning a lot as we continue our work to make Twitter safer - not just from the changes we ship but also from the mistakes we make, and of course, from feedback you share", Ho said. Twitter will send them notifications confirming that it has received their report and ones following up if Twitter opts to act on the report. Twitter, which already uses technology to try and limit some communications, will still review user reports on potential abuse.

At this point, Twitter's egg avatar, its default for a new account, is notorious for being the sign of an incoming d-bag.

In recent weeks it revealed that it would be impossible for people who have been suspended for abusive tweets to create new accounts, and shortly before that, it detailed new ways for users to report abusive accounts.

Twitter is starting to "identify accounts as they're engaging in abusive behavior, even if this behavior hasn't been reported to us", Ho wrote. The company will now be looking to ensure that folks who do not follow it's guidelines about interacting with others, do not make a return to the platform after they are permanently banned.

The Twitter app added muting features for notifications at the end of a year ago.
