Both Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey Vote Against Ben Carson's Confirmation

Both Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey Vote Against Ben Carson's Confirmation

Carson is the 17th of 22 of Trump's Cabinet and Cabinet-level nominations to win Senate approval.

During a Fox News interview on November 22, just after Trump offered Carson the position, Neil Cavuto asked Carson why he was qualified for the job, given that he's a retired neurosurgeon who's never run a federal agency. He will also be tasked with upholding the department's mission to provide housing assistance to low-income families and they help build inclusive and sustainable communities.

Dr. Ben Carson makes way into Trump's cabinet.

Ben Carson arrives for the presidential inaugural parade in front of the White House on January 20. "Ben Carson is the wrong choice to lead HUD".

Housing experts have sought to parse Carson's past comments on government assistance and housing discrimination policy for insight into how he would direct HUD, at times finding little additional clarity.

On Wednesday, the Senate voted 62-37 to allow his nomination to move forward, and Warren was among the "no" votes. When he announced he was dropping out of the race last March, Carson told the crowd: "I will still continue to be heavily involved in trying to save our nation".

The confirmation of the former Republican presidential candidate marks another Washington outsider in the Trump Administration tasked with heading a federal agency.

Carson has not shared specific plans publicly for the department under his leadership. "If properly done, it's a meaning that's as big as anything there is, and Ben will be able to find that true meaning and the true meaning of HUD as its Secretary", Trump said. We don't' want it to be a way of life.

The Washington Post says that HUD's annual budget for 2017 is almost $49 billion, which is to be used to provide rental assistance, programs to fight homelessness and investments to battle urban poverty. Carson went on to attend Yale University and the University of Michigan Medical School before he was named the head of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Children's Center in Baltimore, the first African-American doctor to fill the post.

Carson gained national prominence in 1987 for his role in helping to separate infant conjoined twins.
