NASA releases software for public use free of any royalty

NASA releases software for public use free of any royalty

You can get the software code used on Shuttle Missions, Orion, and Curiosity. I know you might be thinking that what kind of NASA software can be used for Earthly applications. The first pilot edition of NASA's software catalog was made available to the public in April, 2014.

The software catalog is available online and as CDs, including third edition of publications.

NASA says that the software that have been included in the catalog are from a number of its centres including data processing/storage, business systems, operations, propulsion and aeronautics. The newly released NASA 2017-2018 software catalog comes both in hard copy and offline format. This is the first time that NASA has released such huge amount of software for public use. Each catalogue entry is accompanied with a plain language description of what it does.

Categories include structures and mechanisms, autonomous systems, and design and integration tools, among others.

The software will give many benefits, like American jobs' development, revenues' benefit and will help save lives, said Steve Jurczyk, associate administrator for NASA's Space Technology Mission Directorate (STMD) in Washington. It's since been considered as the first all-access, open-source, and complete listing of software to be pooled by a USA government agency and the largest generator of custom codes. Over the past two years, NASA has automated the software release process to make the codes more easily accessible.

The catalogue includes numerous tools actually used by NASA during its space explorations, with a number of software packages being made available for the first time.

These tools have been released under NASA's Technology Transfer program. You can find the software catalog here. And if you find anything interesting, you can request for the release or license.

The catalog has many interesting things including tools like transfer of files to and from satellites, programs that are efficient to recognize building and other important landmarks and software that visualizes the problem of fluids dynamics at the time your drone isn't working and so on.
