Rafael Nadal rolls into Mexico Open quarter-finals

Nick Kyrgios has delivered a masterclass to upset Novak Djokovic and confirm himself as one of the most exciting prospects in world tennis.

Serbian heavyweight Novak Djokovic silenced Slovakia's Martin Klizan6-3, 7-6 (7/4) in the 1st round of the Mexican Open a.k.a Abierto Mexicano Telcel at the Mundo Imperial Acapulco Princess.

Djokovic had not lost to a player as young as Kyrgios (21 years, 296 days) since retiring against 18-year-old Filip Krajinovic in the 2010 Belgrade quarterfinals.

Tournament director Richard Krajicek claimed Kyrgios favoured "his passion beyond his profession" - something that seems so alien to the mentality shown by the likes of Djokovic, Federer and Nadal.

Kyrgios fired unbelievable 25 aces in the match to edge past 12-time grand slam victor Djokovic. "I will have to play so much better than today if I want to have a shot".

Djokovic, the top seed in Mexico, will play against Argentinian Juan Martin del Potro, who needed 2:31:19 to defeat American Frances Tiafoe 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (1).

Djokovic seemed out of sorts, going down 0-40 in the last game, before a powerful Kyrgios forehand settled the match.

The tournament victor in 2005 and 2013, Nadal needed nearly two hours to finish off Nishioka.

In a match between Americans, Christina McHale beat Taylor Townsend 6-1, 7-6 (5), and third-seeded Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia advanced with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over American Madison Brengle.

He has now beaten all of tennis" "big four'.

Nadal, on the other hand, defeated Japan's Yoshihito Nishioka 7-6 (2), 6-3 to reach the semifinals.

The 2-time tournament champion is now 13-0 at the event as he heads to a collision with Marin Cilic who earned a walkover from Steve Johnson.
