Undocumented dad arrested by ICE while dropping kids off at school

The father of four US -born children had been in the country for more than 25 years.

The executive director of the school attended by Avelica-Gonzalez's eighth grade daughter has expressed solidarity with her family after she came to school in tears.

The dad, 48, was driving daughter Fatima Avelica to another school in the northeast Los Angeles neighborhood of Highland Park when ICE stopped them.Left behind in the auto with her mother, Fatima wept inconsolably as she captured video of her father's detention.

Jocelyn Avelica, Avelica-Gonzalez's 19-year-old daughter, told LAist that the ICE agents' auto had been following her father since he left their house that morning.

"It's really hard what we're going through", Avelica-Gonzalez's daughter Brenda Avelica told KABC. "Basically what ICE has told officials is that this man has prior convictions, as a way of essentially throwing him under the bus".

A 48-year-old father named Romulo Avelica-Gonzalez was arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Los Angeles this week while he was dropping his daughters off at school - and the emotional scene was caught on camera. "We are going to take him", the authorities say.

On Thursday (2 March) ICE agents in Jackson, Mississippi, told 22-year-old undocumented immigrant, Daniela Vargas that she would be deported after she spoke at an immigration press conference.

Although it was not immediately clear whether Avelica-Gonzalez had any criminal record, the executive director of Fatima Avelica's school said the girl's father had a DUI conviction that was almost a decade old.

ICE spokesperson Virginia Kice confirmed to ABC News that officers with one of the agency's Los Angeles-based fugitive operations teams took Avelica-Gonzalez into custody during a vehicle stop Tuesday morning. Under the Obama administration, Avelica-Gonzalez likely wouldn't have been targeted for deportation-ICE focused primarily on undocumented immigrants with aggravated felony convictions or gang-related convictions. "And how do we move forward?'" Mireles told KABC. He is still reportedly being held in a detention facility outside Los Angeles, but NDLON is petitioning for his release, and protesters are demonstrating outside the facility.
