Bird flu found on Tyson contracted farm in Tennessee

Bird flu found on Tyson contracted farm in Tennessee

The U.S. Department of Agriculture said 73,500 chickens were destroyed at the facility and will not enter the food system.

The facility has been placed under quarantine, along with approximately 30 other poultry farms within a 6.2-mile (10 km) radius of the site, the Tennessee state government said.

USDA confirmed March 5 that a highly pathogenic avian influenza has sickened a commercial chicken breeder flock in Lincoln County, Tenn., which borders Alabama. Tyson said in a statement that this case should not disrupt its chicken business.

HPAI bird flu was last found in a commercial turkey flock in IN in January 2016. The country has faced surging egg prices and has culled nearly 34 million birds amid a domestic outbreak.

There have been a rising number of reports of Avian influenza outbreaks in Europe and Asia this year.

So far this year South Korea has shipped in almost 1,049 tonnes of USA eggs, according to ministry data, accounting for more than 98 percent of its total egg imports as of March 3.

Taiwan has imposed a ban on imports of all poultry-related products from Tennessee and imports of poultry meat from Wisconsin after the two USA states reported avian influenza outbreaks.

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is urging commercial bird growers and backyard flock owners to use strict biosecurity to protect their birds. Tyson stock has dropped 2.53% on Monday closing at $61.99.

In 2014 and 2015, during a widespread outbreak of HPAI, the United States killed almost 50 million birds, mostly egg-laying hens. The infected flock is being depopulated and tests are ongoing. A quarantine has also been put in place around the farm. Perdue Farms Inc., another large US producer, has no live production in Tennessee, spokeswoman Andrea Staub said in an email.

Holton insists this is not a "food safety concern", adding people should continue to buy chicken, turkey and eggs.

Tennessee officials stress that HPAI does not pose a risk to the food supply.
