Fitbit brings continuous heart rate tracking to the Alta

Despite releasing four new and relatively popular fitness trackers in 2016, lower-than-expected holiday sales meant Fitbit's global market share decreased in the last quarter of the year. But what if you're looking for a device similar to the Alta, but can't go without a heart rate sensor?

The new Fitbit Alta HR features a heart rate monitor, however, without any substantial bumps and weight.

But the Alta HR's deeper sleep-tracking tools, more powerful fitness-tracking features, stylish new classic bands and leather options (with seven new colors in total), and seven whole days of battery life could make it the activity tracker we've all been waiting for. Fit is key to wrist-bound heart rate monitors; not only is the Alta HR available in small, large, and extra-large sizes, but those extra fasteners let you secure the band just tight enough to get an accurate pulse reading.

Fitbit has officially unveiled its latest fitness tracker - the Alta HR. It still includes all-day activity tracking, automatic exercise recognition with SmartTrack, as well as call, text and calendar notifications.

Alta HR is priced at $150 and up, depending upon the styling.

"Alta HR and these powerful new sleep features demonstrate our continued focus on evolving our innovative technology to deliver deeper, more actionable insights to help our users improve their health", said James Park, co-founder and CEO of Fitbit. The strap on the Alta was incredibly hard to put on at times, so I'm really happy to see a simpler locking mechanism this time around. Fitbit is also introducing a new bands designed in partnership with PUBLIC SCHOOL, Vera Wang and Tory Burch.

This makes the Alta HR the fourth Fitbit product line to include heart rate sensors; the Charge, Blaze, and Surge also have them. Sleep Insights takes that idea and pares it down for compatibility with a wider range of Fitbit devices, making recommendations on you sleep schedule based on your own data. We're a bit light on details for Sleep Insights, but it sounds like it'll mesh nicely with the Alta HR and Sleep Stages to give you an overall view of how you're sleeping and how you can achieve a better night's sleep.

Fitbit's biggest upgrade for the Alta HR comes in the heart rate tracker placed on the back of the device. Both features are coming to the Fitbit app in Spring 2017. You can pre-order one today at Fitbit's official website.
