Blue Origin shares a preview of its giant New Glenn rocket

Blue Origin shares a preview of its giant New Glenn rocket

This partnership is the first time Blue Origin will get funding from somewhere other than Bezos.

Images of the first full-scale BE-4 rocket engine assembled by private manufacturer Blue Origin have been tweeted by CEO Jeff Bezos.

The billionaire Amazon founder made the announcement at the Satellite 2017 conference here this morning, delivering a broad outline of Blue Origin's ambitions in commercial space. It's a major milestone for Blue Origin, which has been working on this crucial piece of hardware since 2011. Despite only being unveiled very recently, the booster already has its first customer, with communications satellite giant Eutelsat slated to be use it for a geostationary satellite launch, presumably in 2019.

New Glenn will have about twice the lift capacity of SpaceX's current Falcon 9 rocket, with the ability to put about 100,000 pounds (45,400 kg) into low-altitude Earth orbits.

The deal between Eutelsat and Blue Origin calls for a launch of a geostationary satellite sometime in 2021 or 2022.

"We couldn't hope for a better first partner", Bezos announced as he was joined onstage by Rodolphe Belmer, CEO of the French-based satellite company. A distinction between the New Glenn and the New Shepard is that the former will be equipped with enough power to carry heavy cargo payloads and astronauts into orbit around the Earth. When completed, the New Glenn will use seven BE-4 engines.

Bezos said his goal was to lower the cost of flights so that millions of people can live and work in space.

The animated video shows a New Glenn rocket lifting off from what appears to be Launch Complex 36 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida, which the company is leasing. In including New Glenn in our manifest we are pursuing our longstanding strategy of innovation that drives down the cost of access to space and drives up performance.

The teaser for the fourth-generation rocket engine BE-4 is out. United Launch Alliance (ULA) and Blue Origin are teamed up to develop the new engine.

The New Glenn looks to be a monster rocket.

The New Glenn rocket that will be taking up the satellite is created to take off and land vertically, so it can be reused making it a more attractive option than rockets that can only be used once. The New Glenn is expected to be 7 meters (23 feet) in diameter and range from 82 meters (270 feet) to 95 meters (313 feet). "And if the testing that happens in the next couple of months is successful, we'll probably end up on that Blue Origin (engine)".
