A town in Canada randomly has very, very pink water

Residents in a small Canadian town got a shock this week when pink water came out of their faucets.

Regular, colourless water was not restored until Tuesday morning, much to the annoyance of Onoway's residents, who flooded the town office with complaints.

The chemical is used widely in the treatment of water to remove iron and the smell of rotten eggs that can arise from other substances present in pipeline networks.

"There are really serious health impacts from some of these contaminants", said Laurel Firestone, executive director of the Community Water Center in California.

Mayor Dale Krasnow said the unusual colouring posed no risk to public health, but admitted town "could have done a better job communicating what was going on" to its residents. "Thanks town of Onoway", posted Trevor Winfield, along with a video of his bathroom sink filling up with Pepto-coloured water.

Mr Krasnow said the town was flushing its water distribution system and encouraged residents to run their taps until the water was clear.

Caused by Potassium permanganate, a chemical used in the standard water treatment process, there was no significant health risk to the residents of Onoway, Alberta.

The town has nearly 1,000 people living in it, many of whom refused to drink the water while it was pink.

"It started out with my neighbour asking me if I had pink water, and I'm like "I don't think so", Vicki Van Zanten Heale said. The mayor added that Alberta Environment officials would be visiting the town to review its system to prevent the situation from occurring again.

"And we do apologise for that".

"As the night wore on, more and more people were saying they had pink water", Van Zanten Heale said.

The mayor said the town can learn from the incident to improve their communication skills.
