No mumps outbreak in Lake County despite newly identified cases, officials say

No mumps outbreak in Lake County despite newly identified cases, officials say

Authorities are investigating a possible case of mumps at an Andersonville neighborhood elementary school on the North Side.

Cases of the highly contagious disease are on the rise at four schools in Lake County. The mumps diagnosis by the city's Department of Public Health is only preliminary, and CPS says it will work with the department to take whatever precautionary measures it needs to, the report added.

Aside from the two confirmed cases at Barrington High School last week, the high school now has three probable cases of mumps and 16 suspected cases, Piotrowski said.

There were more suspected cases at Prairie and Station middle schools.

Good hygiene is also key, health officials say, and maintenance staff at the school has been instructed to focus on "high touch" surfaces in the building.

Later this week, Barrington High School will offer a free vaccination clinic, aimed at halting the spread of the virus. School officials encourage anyone showing symptoms to stay home.

Chicago Public Schools notified parents on Monday about a case of mumps at Helen C. Peirce School of International Studies, 1423 W. Bryn Mawr Ave., according to the district.

The disease is commonly spread through sneezing, coughing, sharing of cups or other items that have come in contact with saliva, the department said. Unvaccinated children should be kept home if mumps breaks out in their schools.

Symptoms include fever, headaches, muscle aches, fatigue, and swollen and tender salivary glands under the ears.
