After 120-kg loss, Eman operated upon, to lose more

Eman Ahmed Abd El Aty - who weighs 1,102 pounds - underwent a laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy surgery led by Dr. Muffazal Lakdawala at Saifee Hospital in Mumbai Tuesday.

A spokesperson for the hospital said Abd El Aty was likely to lose more weight in the coming months.

Abd El Aty is now at Mumbai, India's Saifee Hospital, where she's lost more than 220 pounds since arriving in January. "She's been battling with her illness for 36 years".

'Through medicines, we have tried our best to help her lose as much weight as possible, but medicine can't help her reduce weight anymore.

Doctors aim to reduce her weight by a total of 31-and-a-half stone so she can fit on the operating table.

The Egyptian is still believed to be the world's heaviest woman ahead of American Pauline Potter who the Guinness Book of World Records recorded at 293 kilos in July past year. According to the statement from hospital, "she had an uneventful surgery and anesthesia course".

"Eman has lost over 100 kilograms and has been shedding weight gradually on a daily basis with all the treatment and support", she told AFP.

She was born weighing a staggering 11 lbs and was shortly diagnosed afterwards with the parasitic disease called Elephantiasis.

In December 2016, Indian Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj helped her obtain a visa to India, where a team of dedicated local doctors are supervising her case.

She was then flown in a cargo plane to India. According to the team of doctors, Egyptian women weight had been brought under 400 kilograms since she arrived in Mumbai in early February.

Bariatric surgery, also known as weight loss surgery, is used as a last resort to treat people who are dangerously obese and carrying an excessive amount of body fat.

They say she is now able to sit up and is expected to spend several months being monitored and receiving physiotherapy to exercise her muscles before returning to Egypt.
