Paying for Trump's dubious immigration goals isn't easy (or cheap)

Paying for Trump's dubious immigration goals isn't easy (or cheap)

The Trump administration is reportedly considering deep budget cuts for the Transportation Security Administration and Coast Guard to pay for the proposed border wall and other measures to crack down on illegal immigration. "Instead, we should be supporting the Coast Guard's ongoing and much-needed fleet recapitalization program, including the design and construction of the new of the new offshore patrol cutter and the continued production of the new, fast response cutter".

This budget proposal made me wonder: Would the Office of Management and Budget have even thought of targeting the Coast Guard for cuts if it were not housed within the Department of Homeland Security?

To put this in perspective, the draft budget plan is nothing more than a paper document at this point, reflecting the thinking of the federal budget agency that is notorious for making provocative proposals. But the outline has drawn bipartisan criticism from lawmakers concerned about cuts to key national security programs.

OMB director Mick Mulvaney did not deny the reported cuts on Wednesday in an interview on MSNBC's Morning Joe. Duncan Hunter, a Republican from California and a Trump supporter who has been intensely critical of the Coast Guard cut.

"We can not defend our homeland and continue critical security missions without the U.S. Coast Guard".

"The White House needs to go back to drawing board with its budget and produce something to Congress that is workable, realistic, and, most importantly, keeps our country safe", he said. "It would be premature for us to comment - or anyone to report - on the specifics of this internal discussion before its publication", said OMB spokesman John Czwartacki, as reported by CNN. In fact, the Trump OMB's draft proposal spends billions taken from real national security agencies, to pay for "immigration detention beds" and other Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) costs to fulfill Trump's campaign pledge to purge Mexicans from "America the great". "If we build a wall along the southern border, and gut the Coast Guard in the process - what we've seen from these drug cartels is that they're creative - and I think that just incentivizes the cartels to smuggle more drugs across our maritime boundaries".

Rep. Ron DeSantis, a Florida Republican and decorated military veteran, is less than thrilled at reports that President Donald Trump is considering cuts in the U.S. Coast Guard budget to help pay for the building of a U.S. -Mexico border wall. The cuts would reportedly eliminate four programs that cost the agency $187 million and have been considered, according to The Washington Post, "a vital piece of airport security and for preventing a repetition of the September 11, 2001, hijackings after planes are aloft".
