Police raid marijuana dispensaries across Canada

Police raid marijuana dispensaries across Canada

Neither the Emerys' lawyer, Jack Lloyd, nor Toronto police could confirm immediately what, if any, charges the couple is facing. "They're in good spirits. but they're in custody, hopeful that we can have a productive bail hearing tomorrow".

Toronto police said it's part of an investigation dubbed Project Gator, which is targeting marijuana dispensaries.

The four other search warrants were at private residences, two in Toronto, one in Stoney Creek and the other in Vancouver.

Prominent marijuana activists Marc and Jodie Emery have been arrested in Toronto and police are raiding several pot dispensaries associated with the couple.

"It appears they were arrested at the airport and not as part of a raid", he posted at 1:45 a.m.

The court was filled with about a dozen of Emery supporters, advocates of medical marijuana and pot dispensary stakeholders.

The Emerys own the Cannabis Culture brand, which is used by a chain of 19 marijuana dispensaries in British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec.

No employees of the dispensaries were arrested, Pugash said.

The turmoil has occurred as the federal government continues to mull changes to marijuana laws.

Raids are also being conducted at Cannabis Culture shops in Ottawa and Toronto.

A Vancouver-based lawyer for the Emerys said in a statement that "several cannabis activists" have been arrested in addition to his clients.

Arguably one of the most well-known marijuana advocates in the country, Marc Emery is no stranger to the legal system, having been arrested numerous times over the years in Canada for pot-related offences. He also served more than four years in a USA federal prison for selling marijuana seeds across the border from his Vancouver business.

"In my opinion, these places help keep weed regulated", she said.

"Co-ordinated countrywide raids attempting, futilely, to enforce an outdated and harmful law degrades public confidence in the administration of justice, wastes valuable taxpayer funds, wastes scarce police, prosecutorial and judicial resources and benefits precisely no one", Kirk Tousaw said.
