When Does Daylight Saving Time Start?

For most of the people living in the United States (excluding numerous U.S. territories, Hawai'i, and residents of Arizona outside of the Navajo Nation), Sunday, March 12, will mark the start of Daylight Saving Time (DST).

The hour of sleep lost - or gained - may play a bigger, perhaps more risky role in our body's natural rhythm than we think.

It's nearly time to spring forward again.

Rather than simply eliminate DST, the new bill by Assemblymember Kansen Chu (D - San Jose) would give the Legislature the power to change its dates and times by a majority vote.

That means a shift in the time of both sunrise and sunset.

"Because children's internal clocks are affected by light and dark, parents should be sure to turn on the lights and open the blinds to let in as much natural light as possible in the morning", she said, "This signals to the child's body that it's time to start the day". He put together a report that outlined 10 reasons why Daylight Saving Time was a good idea.

If the bill had gone into effect, Washington would have stopped using daylight saving time in 2019. It wasn't until 1966 that DST legislation was passed without being attached to a war, and today we observe this adjusted schedule from the second Sunday in March through the first Sunday in November. Daylight Saving Time now accounts for about 65% of the year. IN did not observe the practice until 2005.

All the US territories (American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands) do not observe DST. It also is a crime deterrent, DOT claims, because people are out during the daylight and not at night, "when more crime occurs", the agency states. In the previous year alone, 14 state legislatures have debated bills aimed at revising how we keep time. The United Kingdom went so far as to establish "Double Summer Time" during World War II so that their clocks were ahead two hours during the summer and one hour ahead even in winter.

While shifting the clock forward doesn't seem like a big deal for adults, for kids it's a whole other story.
