No 10: Talk of new Scottish referendum a 'distraction'

No 10: Talk of new Scottish referendum a 'distraction'

The polling found also that 52 per cent of those questioned believe a second referendum should be held to either accept or reject whatever Brexit deal the UK Government is able to agree with the European Union, the same proportion who feel Nicola Sturgeon is doing a good job as first minister in standing up for Scotland's interest as part of the process of Brexit.

"She needs to put the country first for once".

No decision has yet been taken on a vote, she added.

When pressed whether autumn 2018 was a likely date Sturgeon said: "I think would be the common sense time for, Scotland to have that choice, if that is the road we choose to go down".

More than 55 per cent of Scotland voted to remain in the United Kingdom in 2014 at a time when leaving the European Union was a distant pipe dream for Eurosceptics. For many nationalists, this will not quite compute.

Discussing her constant pestering, Mr Gove told the BBC's Brexit: Britain's Biggest Deal programme the First Minister's case for independence is "weaker" since Britain opted to sever its ties with the EU. "It was a fair, decisive and legal vote", he said. "It will certainly provide the SNP with a lift ahead of their spring conference in Aberdeen next week".

It seems she is being eclipsed in popularity by Ruth Davidson, leader of the Scottish Tories.

Last week May accused Sturgeon and her party of "tunnel-vision nationalism which focuses only on independence at any cost" and said that preserving the unity of the a key objective of her government.

The EU's chief negotiator for Brexit, Michel Barnier, has said that an exit agreement with the United Kingdom should be reached by October 2018 though many diplomats and trade negotiators have expressed concern that a comprehensive Brexit deal would be hard to strike in such a short time.

There is no answer yet to the challenging question of which currency an independent Scotland would use, such as a new one or adopting sterling, or indeed be expected to adopt the euro.

Meanwhile, the former Scottish Secretary Alistair Carmichael has warned Theresa May not to make the next referendum campaign a battle between Westminster and Holyrood, arguing that it must be "must more Scottish-centric" to stop a Yes vote. I don't think there's a problem with that.

Mrs Sturgeon was also quizzed by the BBC's political editor Laura Kuenssberg on whether or not she was bluffing about holding another referendum.
