Pregnancy after breast cancer is safe, Canadian study suggests

The study tied higher soy consumption to a longer life after breast cancer, especially for women with hormone receptor negative breast cancers - which tend to be aggressive, and don't respond to hormone therapy.

"We think that a pregnancy at the time of breast cancer does not pose a risk to the mother", said principal researcher Dr. Steven Narod, director of the hospital's familial breast cancer research unit.

The results suggested that use of other hormonal contraceptives was, by contrast, associated with 32 percent higher breast cancer risk among younger women under 50 when compared to women who did not use hormonal contraceptives.

She added that soy food products can act as a shield for women diagnosed with hormone receptor-negative breast cancer.

Further, women who dyed their hair also had an increased risk of 23 per cent compared to those who did not, researchers said.

Lead researcher, Piet van den Brandt told the Telegraph, "Our research can help to shine a light on how dietary patterns can affect cancer risk".

Dr. Fang Fang Zhang, of the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University conducted a study along with her colleagues.

However, isoflavones can be treated as a weaker form of estrogen which takes up space among the breast cancer cells and crowds out the more powerful cancer causing estrogen from the body.

Patients in the low moderate-intensity to vigorous-intensity physical activity group also had a higher likelihood of smoking cigarettes and having worse physical functioning and vitality scores; however, cancer treatment-related factors did not significantly predict for the level of physical activity patients participated in during the survivorship trajectory.

"Regions of the world that did have a lot of soy in their diet had lower rates of breast cancer", says McIsaacs. These are some of the figures presented during the conference "Breast Journal Club - The Importance of Cancer Research", which today and tomorrow brings together in Naples some of the most important national and worldwide experts on the disease. None of the women who followed a Mediterranean diet suffered a recurrence of the disease.

Due to this difference, it's not known whether breast cancer patients should consume isoflavone or prevent it.
