In warning for US, Infantino says no World Cup without access

In warning for US, Infantino says no World Cup without access

Federation Internationale de Football Association president Gianni Infantino told reporters in London on Thursday that Trump's executive order that temporarily bars entry to the country for citizens from Iran, Somalia, Sudan, Yemen, Syria and Libya could negate a hosting bid by the U.S.

Infantino was speaking in London and stated that bid requirements have yet to be finalised.

"The requirements will be clear", he said. FIFA President Gianni Infantino says however that Trump's signing of an executive order that places a 90-day travel ban on people from six Muslim majority nations on Monday could seriously harm its chances.

President Donald Trump's travel ban could have a big impact on global soccer. The World Cup is an opportunity to circumvent the suffocating rhythms of geopolitics and humanize nations that often exist exclusively as abstractions. But failure to guarantee access to the country for teams and athletes who qualify could jeopardize an American bid, Infantino cautioned. "And then each country can make up their decision, whether they want to bid or not based on the requirements", he said.

US foreign policy will be shaped by President Trump moving forward.

CONCACAF, which includes the U.S., Mexico and Canada, has not hosted since 1994 and is now the favorite for 2026.

It was a strong statement but, given UEFA does not run the World Cup, was not seen as a roadblock at the time.

And as the most-watched sporting event in the world, it's a major opportunity for the USA to demonstrate "soft power" - to expand its influence by appearing attractive to the world and showcasing desirable cultural values.

Only one of the countries now banned under Trump's recently revised travel ban has qualified for the World Cup in the past: Iran, which has made it to the final rounds four times.

The Guardian also pointed out that Trump's policies could affect Los Angeles' bid for the 2024 Olympic Games, for which their only remaining competition is Paris. It does feel falsely self-righteous, however, given the blind eye it has turned towards human rights abuses in the run-up to the 2022 Qatar World Cup. We'll have to wait until 2020 to see how the bidding process pans out.
