Sony Playstation 4 Now Supports External Hard Drives And Boost Mode

The PS4 will also finally support the option to plug in an external hard drive for extra storage, a feature that was originally announced last month.

Historically, Sony have locked down PlayStation hard drives tighter than Fort Knox, with encryption that prevents users from swapping them between devices without losing all of their data.

Sony has now released the v4.50 firmware update to all PlayStation 4 games consoles in the wild.

The update will focus largely on quality-of-life improvements to various aspects of the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 4 Pro, improving usability and functionality of various features.

The big software update will feature Boost Mode for PS4 Pro only, as well as improved 2D visuals for PS VR. Sony detailed that if the screen size is switched to medium or small the content's frame rate increases to 90Hz to 120Hz.

We're adding voice chat when using Remote Play on Windows PC, Mac or an Xperia device. When enabled, games without explicit PS4 Pro optimizations can see bumps in performance up to 38 percent, so it was a bit odd when it was barely mentioned. This feature has been created to provide better performance for select legacy titles that have not been patched to take advantage of the PS4 Pro's faster CPU and its faster and double-sized GPU. Sony said that boost mode "can provide a noticeable frame rate boost" in games that feature variable frame rates, and stability for games that operate at fixed frame rates.

While Boost Mode was still under beta testing, the Digital Foundry team looked at some of the most popular non-Pro PS4 titles, and found that many of them benefited significantly. For that reason, Sony lets you toggle Boost Mode at will. Additionally, the setting can be turned off so that the experience is that of a standard PS4. This would be for instances where you're logged in to PSN through the PlayStation App or the PlayStation Messages app.

When you receive a Party invitation from your friends on PS Messages, now you can respond with a quick reply, "I'll join later" or "Sorry, I can't join", when you want to get back to them ASAP. Thanks to those who have taken part in the beta and provided us with useful feedback.
