The struggle will continue: Kejriwal admits humbling defeat in Punjab

The struggle will continue: Kejriwal admits humbling defeat in Punjab

As of 1:46 pm on Saturday, the party had a 23.7% vote share in the Assembly election.

However, in both the states AAP was perceived as a party of outsiders.

In an interaction with the media, Mr. Kejriwal had last month said that after the Punjab elections, the party would focus on Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh, where polls are due later this year.

With Nitish Kumar's JD (U) looking to expand its presence beyond Bihar and former aide Yogendra Yadav's Swaraj Abhiyan entering the poll fray this time, the stakes are even higher for AAP to retain its electoral voter base of migrants and Poorvanchalis in the city.

Satish Jain AAP's coordinator for Mumbai Metropolitan Region said, "Party workers will distribute candies".

Punjab which witnessed a triangular contest in the assembly polls, could witness a tough contest between AAP and Congress while anti-incumbency factor will work against ruling Shiromani Akali Dal-Bharatiya Janata Party and they may face a rout. The AAP's senior leadership in Delhi threw out its Punjab convenor Sucha Singh Chhottepur past year, and Chhottepur had complained that the party's high command was imposing central leaders on the Punjab unit.

In Punjab, where AAP was seen as an alternative to the Akalis and the Congress, it could not even come close to the victory it dreamed of. "The struggle will continue", the chief minister tweeted after the results.

"We will have to introspect". Speaking on the developments in Punjab and Goa, AAP Chief and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that he has accepted people's verdict.

In an interview to inUth.com, Marathe said, "There is no such thing as a national ambition of a party which is born out of a movement to change the system".

Party workers had gathered outside Kejriwal's residence, but as the trends indicated that party was not winning any of the two states, the crowd started ebbing.

Only nine of the party candidates secured more than 2000 votes, and these were in the constituencies of Mapusa, Aldona, Cumbharjua, Cortalim, Nuvem, Curtorim, Curchorem, besides Benaulim and Cuncolim.
