Daylight Saving Time: Clocks 'Spring Forward' One Hour Tonight

Daylight Saving Time: Clocks 'Spring Forward' One Hour Tonight

According to the aptly named TimeAndDate.com, we will "spring forward" an hour at 2 a.m. on Sunday March 12 and then "fall back" an hour when daylight saving time ends on November 5, 2017 - save for the exception of Alaska, Arizona, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Guam and American Samoa which don't observe daylight saving. There's more daylight in the summer, to be sure, but that has to do with our trip around the sun, not with setting our clocks forward an hour. If only we could save ourselves from the seasonal allergies.

"Just keep spring forward".

"A 2008 U.S. Department of Energy study reported that daylight saving time reduces annual energy use by about 0.03 percent", CNN reported.

This time jumping business is also risky as it is associated with increased risk of fatal auto crashes, heart attacks and strokes, said Kenneth Wright, director of the University of Colorado's Sleep and Chronobiology Lab in Boulder.

Daylight saving time is Sunday, but doctors are more concerned with the two days after.

The best solution would be to stay with what is known as daylight saving time year-round.

In 1986 Congress, changed the beginning of DST to the first Sunday in April, while the end remained the last Sunday in October.

In recent years, the move, which intends to shift more sunlight hours to the evening at the expense of fewer in the morning, has been questioned if it's really needed anymore. Over the years, there's been much debate about the actual energy savings.

States are able to exempt themselves.

So who did benefit from the new time change in 1918?

Montana's State Senator Ryan Osmundson (R-Buffalo) introduced a bill in the state Legislature to exempt Montana from the time-change.

For a half century, Arizona - but not including the Navajo reservation - has refused to perform the standard-to-daylight-saving-and-back-again dance. Other non-observers are the American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

Losing sleep is a concern for law enforcement agencies like the California Highway Patrol, which recommends people get to extra sleep to make up for the hour lost.

Further behind. In 2016, California legislators were almost unanimous against a measure stopping the move to daylight-saving time.
