Kong: Skull Island opens to $142.6 million worldwide

Kong: Skull Island opens to $142.6 million worldwide

According to studio estimates Sunday, "Kong: Skull Island" amassed $61 million in its first weekend in theaters, surpassing expectations and easily beating out "Logan", which is now in its second weekend.

The film boasts an all-star cast of Academy Award victor Brie Larson, Academy Award nominees Samuel L. Jackson and John C. Reilly, and Tom Hiddleston.

Grosses for the reboot "Kong: Skull Island" and the Wolverine threequel "Logan" also come with surprises.

In its second weekend, Fox's Logan dropped 58 per cent to $37.8 million, pushing its stateside total to $152.6 million.

"The movie is pure fun and that's translating into the box office", said Jeff Goldstein, domestic distribution chief at Warner Bros. Helmed by French filmmaker Julia Ducournau, Raw made headlines along the festival circuit - namely at TIFF in September, where several audience members reportedly fainted during one of the film's particularly graphic scenes. Basking in near-universal acclaim, the thriller about a black photographer (Daniel Kaluuya) meeting his white girlfriend's (Allison Williams) sinister family has coasted on organic hype.

The smart satire cost $4.5 million to produce and has already taken in more than $111 million in three weeks.

In just two weeks in theaters, "Logan" has brought in almost $153 million.

Rounding out the top five are the Lionsgate/Summit release The Shack, which pulls in another $10.1 million for a 10-day total of $32.3 million, and Warner Bros.

The Lego Batman Movie stacked up $7.8 million, coming in fifth.

Ticket sales were up almost 25% from the same weekend in 2016 - a period that overlapped with the second weekend of "Zootopia" and the debut of "10 Cloverfield Lane". Next weekend brings the release of "Beauty and the Beast", which should expand 2017's lead.
