Biden: Fight against cancer lifts off with 'Moonshot'

The Bidens are now continuing the work of the initiative with their nonprofit Biden Foundation "to spare other families what our family, and so many other families, have gone through", he said.

Addressing the audience, many of whom include techies and innovators, Biden said: "Many of you are developing technologies and innovations for purposes large and small, fun and serious, entertaining and lifesaving, that have nothing to do with cancer - but you could make a big impact". "We need you to help us reach people who need to change their behavior and avoid cancer".

But Biden also highlighted some of the ongoing initiatives in the Cancer Moonshot aimed at making cancer research data more available to doctors, including the National Cancer Institute's Genomic Data Commons that previously contained cancer sequencing information for 14,000 patients, but was inaccessible to clinicians and researchers.

Obama then handed Biden the reins to lead the program meant to accelerate cancer research in America.

Biden reminded people that the bulk of funding for research comes from taxpayers.

In many ways, the appearance of Joe Biden at SXSW was an inevitability as he embarks on a new mission in his post-political life: The fight against cancer.

Jill Biden introduced "my man of action", as the crowd cheered, adding that her husband is "a man who always strives to make the seemingly impossible possible". In his efforts to convince "innovative minds" to join in on his goal, Biden delivered a message of hope for eradicating the disease.

"You might think that at a time when Facebook has an algorithm to tell if someone is exhibiting potentially suicidal tendencies, that our medical centers would be able to find and test people at risk for certain cancers".

The former Vice President, who lost his own son to brain cancer, knows firsthand how devastating that fight can be.

During his remarks on Sunday, Biden said the fight against cancer is "the only bipartisan thing left in America".

Biden said he's also eager to work with President Donald Trump and his administration on the cancer moonshot.

Biden referenced President John F. Kennedy's famous space race speech, where he called efforts to the moon something that "we are unwilling to postpone".

"We're excited to have Vice President Biden address the creative innovators and entrepreneurs that attend SXSW", said the festival's chief programming officer, Hugh Forrest.

He remains convinced that Democrats and Republicans will work together to fund research even if they're at odds about nearly everything else.

"That's not a cancer problem", Biden said.

"The one thing I know maybe better than anybody living is the Congress", Joe Biden said.

Ever since Donald Trump pulled the biggest upset in United States political history, and quite frankly even before that, the divide among Democrats and Republicans, progressives and conservatives, has escalated into a civil war of words, and threatens to stop any sort of progress in getting anything through Congress.
