Harrisburg Toddler, 3, Dies From Fire Blamed on Recharging Hoverboard

Two other children in the Harrisburg home are in critical condition at a local burn center. Three minors were pulled from the burning home.

A spokesman for the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission, Scott Wolfson, told NBC News that the fire was the first fatal incident linked to hoverboards.

The Lehigh County coroner's office said Ashanti Hughes was pronounced dead Saturday morning at Lehigh Valley Hospital Cedar Crest. Officials made an announcement Saturday that five people in total had to be rescued from the inferno, with one of them jumping from the second story of the building.

Fire Lt. Dennis DeVoe, a 21-year veteran, was responding to the fire when his vehicle was hit at an intersection by 19-year-old Khanyae Kendall, who was reportedly driving a stolen vehicle. A teenage boy and a man were also hurt, but both were released from the hospital.

Kendall is charged with leaving the scene of an accident, driving under the influence, receiving stolen property, aggravated assault by vehicle, and making false reports to law enforcement.

Ashanti died at Lehigh Valley burn center in Allentown, Pennsylvania, PennLive reported. He was also booked on other charges.

To further compound Friday's tragedy, a firefighter died while responding to the blaze - and a teenager was charged with allegedly driving a stolen auto while intoxicated in the fatal crash.

'They heard some sizzling and crackling in the hoverboard and shortly thereafter, it exploded in flames, ' Harrisburg Fire Chief Brian Enterline said.

Enterline said a hoverboard - the popular battery-powered toy featuring a flat surface to stand on and a wheel on either side that kids ride around on - was charging near the front door.

There has been over 50 reports in 24 states of unreasonable fire started by self-balancing scooters. Enterline warned consumers against purchasing knockoff brands, which are not considered safe by UL, formerly Underwriters Laboratories standards. The investigation into fire is ongoing.
