Intel spends $20 billion on driverless tech firm Mobileye

Most importantly, a test with 40 self-driving cars, in partnership with BMW, will continue as scheduled, meaning that this technology is only going to get closer. Intel and MobilEye have already been working together on BMW's iNext autonomous driving platform which the German auto manufacturer wants to put into service in less than five years.

Intel sees autonomous driving as another outlet for its high-performance computing, by virtue of the large amounts of sensor data genereated by modern cars. The Israeli company now utilizes STM chips for the products it provides auto manufacturers with.

Last year, BMW announced that it was joining forces with Mobileye and Intel on a self-drive project for "highly and fully automated driving" to be commercially available by 2021, called the BMW iNext. Amid safety concerns about Tesla's Autopilot technology, the two companies engaged in public finger-pointing.

The rumoured $115bn deal will be the biggest ever Israeli high tech deal.

Mobileye was founded in 1999. "Intel estimates the vehicle systems, data and services market opportunity to be up to $70 billion by 2030".

The Intel-Mobileye deal is the latest investment by a technology company in the future of self-driving cars.

The fact that Mobileye was purchased by Intel, rather than an OEM or Tier 1 supplier, should be a good thing, according to Ben Volkow, CEO of Otonomo (another Israeli automotive tech company). Both chip makers have been investing in vehicles, and Intel appears to be paying a premium to catch up and push forward with its autonomous vehicle plans.

You might already have heard of MobilEye's technology.

By adding Mobileye's technology and workforce to its own organization, Intel said it aims to speed up innovation and position itself as a leader in the fast-developing market for autonomous cars.

Mobileye and Intel are no strangers.

The acquisition of Mobileye could propel Intel into the front ranks of automotive suppliers at a time when the company has been downplaying its core semiconductor business. He also said he and Chief Technology Officer Amnon Shashua will be "running Mobileye just as we have done in the past".
