Thousands Of Flights Cancelled Today And Tomorrow Because Of Massive Winter Storm

Airlines in the United States have already canceled around 5,300 flights Monday, March 13 and Tuesday as a winter storm hammers the Midwest and Northeast.

Delta Air Lines and its regional carriers canceled about 130 flights Monday, said spokesman Michael Thomas.

Several flights leaving from and arriving to and from the area Tuesday and Wednesday morning have already been cancelled.

Southwest Airlines said it plans to ground Northeast flights Tuesday.

Spirit Airlines, which flies from PHL and Atlantic City, will let passengers planning to fly Tuesday and Wednesday rebook, but it'll have to be done by Saturday to avoid a modification charge or pay a fare difference. LaGuardia and JFK airports in New York, Philadelphia International, Reagan National in Washington, and Boston Logan International are also seeing high cancelation rates for Tuesday.

You can check the status of your flight here. But the impending storm had more fliers coming through today. Southwest and American Airlines account for the majority of cancelations. "What they don't want to do is potentially, 'OK, let's fly an airplane in here tonight and have it snowed in here, all day tomorrow because of visibility issues", Miller added. "And so, we're able now to all be on the same flight, but now we're on standby when we get to our next location".

"I made a decision to move my flight to this morning just to be safe", said Friedman.

"It is probably going to grow", said Troy Bell, the airport's spokesman.

American Airlines: Customers flying into or out of affected airports in a specific date range can change their trips to travel either by March 15 or March 17 (depending on airport) without incurring change fees.
