Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu meets Trump envoy

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu meets Trump envoy

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met for five hours on Monday with Jason Greenblatt, a lawyer who was appointed chief negotiator for global affairs by President Donald Trump.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump's Middle East envoy Jason Greenblatt met in Jerusalem and discussed advancing the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.

Following the lengthy meeting, they issued a statement reaffirming "the joint commitment of both Israel and the United States to advance a genuine and lasting peace between Israel and the Palestinians that strengthens the security of Israel and enhances stability in the region".

"I'm looking at two-state and one-state, and I like the one that both parties like".

On Friday, Trump spoke to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and invited him to the White House.

The statement added that Netanyahu and Greenblatt discussed Israel's settlement building "with the hope of reaching a formula that will aim to promote peace and security".

The Palestinian gross domestic product now stands at approximately $300 million annually, far less than neighboring Israel's GDP, which is upwards of $12 billion. The U.S. envoy, who served as chief legal officer for the Trump Organization for 20 years before joining the administration, was to return to Jerusalem from the West Bank for more meetings with Israeli officials, including Isaac Herzog, leader of the opposition in parliament.

Greenblatt also met with a number of other Palestinian groups on Tuesday, including a group of entrepreneurs, students in Bethlehem, PA security officials, and residents of refugee camp north of Ramallah.

Netanyahu said at a press conference on Tuesday that his talks with Greenblatt were "good", "extensive", and "candid in the positive sense of the word".

Greenblatt's visit marks the first major attempt by the new USA administration to address the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, after two months that have seen officials hesitate on support for the two-state solution, the location of the US embassy and settlements.
