Trent Boult ruled out of second Test with injury

Trent Boult ruled out of second Test with injury

"I don't think ideally we want to play South Africa on a seamer friendly surface", said coach Mike Hesson, who was satisfied with the efforts of his twin-spin attack in the first Test where New Zealand had a chance until rain ensured a frustrating draw on the final day.

South Africa's luck with the coin on this tour continued as Faf du Plessis won the toss and opted to bowl on a sunny, calm Wellington day.

Taylor's replacement, Neil Broom, is to make his test debut at the age of 33, while number five Henry Nicholls is still trying to cement his place in worldwide cricket.

Faf du Plessis said: "He's a fantastic bowler and a huge loss for them".

New Zealand: Tom Latham, Jeet Raval, Kane Williamson (capt), Neil Broom, Henry Nicholls, James Neesham, BJ Watling, Colin de Grandhomme, Tim Southee, Neil Wagner, Jeetan Patel.

"We couldn't get rid of Kane in the first test and they were successful as a unit".

"So there lies the secret".

Du Plessis admitted the squeeze will be on Broom, a veteran batsman but one feeling his way into test cricket.

The off-spinner's last Test appearance was also against New Zealand in August 2016, after which he was dropped for Keshav Maharaj.

"That'll be big for them", du Plessis. "The confidence from that is definitely a big thing for us but I'm not sure if conditions will be the same as five years ago".

"When it comes to a two-match series you have to be a little bit more street smart because it can go both ways", he said. "He's a guy who's not scared of a challenge", du Plessis said. "All three will be prepared to do the hard work".
