University of Missouri hires Cuonzo Martin to be next men's basketball coach

California basketball coach Cuonzo Martin has resigned, the school announced Wednesday.

We'll update this post as the coaching situation in Bloomington continues to develop.

Martin is a native of East St. Louis and attended Lincoln High School where he was a part of two state championship teams.

Martin, who spent the last three seasons at Cal, informed athletic director Matt Williams this morning.

Goodman reports that Martin and Missouri are finalizing a 7-year contract. Martin coached at Missouri State from 2008-09 through the 2010-11 season.

Assistant coach Wyking Jones is serving as Cal's interim coach.

The 45-year-old Martin had been at Cal for three seasons, going 62-39 during his time in Berkeley and leading the Golden Bears to the NCAA Tournament last season.

Multiple sources told The Star that Martin, whose Golden Bears finished 21-13 this season after a first-round upset Tuesday night in the NIT, has been atop Mizzou's list of candidates.

Last season, Cal went a ideal 18-0 at home and tied for third in the Pac-12 with a 23-11 overall record and 12-6 record in conference. He coached the Tennessee Volunteers until 2014 when he took the job at Cal.

Martin brings a resume to Columbia that includes two NCAA Tournament appearances and six 20-win seasons, but the regular-season success hasn't translated into many deep runs in the postseason. He will become Missouri's fifth head coach since 1999.
