Adrian Peterson will not return to Vikings

Minnesota general manager Rick Spielman confirmed so on Thursday.

Peterson has been an unrestricted free agent since March 9 when Minnesota declined to exercise the 2017 option on his contract.

"Adrian will be moving on", Spielman said on a conference call with local reporters. Peterson spent his entire National Football League career with the Vikings organization.

The Vikings signed Latavius Murray to a three-year, $15 million deal this week.

His 10-year career with the Vikings comes to an end following shortened seasons in two of the past three years. There haven't been any reciprocal signs of interest those teams, although Murray's departure does leave the Raiders without their leading rusher from last season.

Murray was a sixth-round draft pick of the Raiders out of Central Florida in 2013.

It remains to be seen what number Murray will wear with the Vikings.

Classy move by the newest Viking.

"There wasn't a thought in my mind to try and wear or ask for the #28", Murray wrote.

However, the running back leaves behind a complicated legacy due to his being indicted on a child abuse charge in 2014. In 2015, he had 1,066 rushing yards and six scores. Peterson has five 200-yard games and topped the 100-yard mark 50 times, but he'll be 32 next week. He ran for 788 yards and a career-high 12 touchdowns last season. The other $5.15 million would kick in if he were retained after year one.

Peterson is still a free agent, and a reunion with the Vikings has always been considered a possibility for the running back.
