Jets sweeten their offer to free agent Dont'a Hightower with cupcakes

Jets sweeten their offer to free agent Dont'a Hightower with cupcakes

Hightower was expected to stay with New England, but the Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Jets tried to pull him away.

In a column following Hightower's deal with the Patriots, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Ed Bouchette wrote that Hightower wasn't worth the price. If the Patriots can fix their relationship with him, there's no reason to believe that this team isn't the favorite to repeat as a Super Bowl champion in 2017.

The deal also includes $19 million in guaranteed money, according to Hightower's agency, Sports Trust Advisors, which announced the news on Twitter. The Jets were said to have made a very strong offer for Hightower, but one that they withdrew when he finished his free agent visit without agreeing to a contract.

It is believed that he is seeking a contract that would pay in excess of $10 million per season.

But enough about who didn't get Hightower, for this is not about an opponent's latest loss, but rather another major victory for the Patriots, and one that comes barely a month after they won their second Super Bowl in three seasons.

Despite what Bouchette says are underwhelming numbers, the point remains that the Patriots brought back a key defender who helped them win two Super Bowls over the past three seasons.

The Patriots have surely restocked their roster for 2017, and are not done with more moves to come in free agency and likely in the upcoming 2017 NFL Draft. The only domino remaining is that of Malcolm Butler. Hightower played 67.9 percent of the defensive snaps in the 2016 regular season, 54.2 percent in the 2015 regular season and 76.7 percent in the 2014 regular season.

Elandon Roberts, Shea McClellin, Jonathan Freeny, and Kyle Van Noy could continue to be solid rotational linebackers behind Hightower moving forward.

As the brain of the defense, a respected leader and a high-level performer, Hightower would have been irreplaceable, so the re-signing continued to enhance the Patriots' successful offseason. They have been uncharacteristically aggressive over the past week, signing Stephon Gilmore to a monster deal and making a trade for Brandin Cooks.
