Trump Declares War on EPA Mileage Standards

Trump Declares War on EPA Mileage Standards

The 36 mpg standard is aggressive, but there's every reason to believe the auto industry can achieve it. The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, a collective of automakers that represents 77 percent of all vehicle and light truck sales in the country, has been pushing the Environmental Protection Agency to reconsider rules put in place before Obama left office.

The EPA had to file its midterm review this year and they rushed it to confirm the standards before Trump took over in January.

The Clean Power Plan was an Obama-era initiative that compelled U.S. states to cut down their carbon dioxide emissions. Trump will make the announcement Wednesday during a visit with automakers in Detroit. But most of that change was driven by China reducing its emissions, experts said.

"These standards are costly for automakers and the American people", Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt said.

Trump in the White House and a fossil fuel ally at the helm of the EPA may have been seen as openings to scrap the stricter standards.

United Auto Workers president Dennis Williams said he appreciates Trump being there but he is anxious about environmental standards for the automobile industry.

"We want to be the auto capital of the world again", the president said.

Govs. Jay Inslee of Washington, Kate Brown of OR, protest Trump administration decision to ease fuel efficiency standards for auto manufacturers.

Under rules adopted by the Obama administration shortly before Trump became president, the average fuel efficiency of cars and other light vehicles sold in America would need to improve to more than 50 miles per gallon by 2025. "Our strong vehicle fuel economy standards are a reflection of that and position the U.S.to remain competitive in the global push toward clean cars". Government set emission standards ensures the playing field is leveled - making cars fuel efficient has to be built into the cost for everyone selling cars in America. An automaker lobbying group sent a letter to Trump's transition team just two days after his election to lobby for him to relax the rules. Automakers had pleaded with Trump during a meeting to revist the EPA rules, and Trump will make it official Wednesday while tying the decision to manufacturing jobs, reports the New York Times. Environmentalists have vowed to sue if the Trump administration weakens them.

The EPA under Mr Obama argued that manufacturers were "well positioned to meet the standards at lower costs than previously estimated", averaging $875 per vehicle, and said the objectives should be achievable even with "very low penetration" of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids. The California standards are now used by at least a dozen states, according to ABC News.
