2nd Case Of Bird Flu Found Near Lincoln Co. Outbreak

"This includes, but is not limited to, poultry exhibitions or sales at regional and county fairs, festivals, swap meets, exotic sales and live bird markets, flea markets and auctions".

Alabama has found bird flu at three poultry facilities in the northern part of the state, its agriculture department said on Tuesday, near the location where two cases were detected recently in Tennessee. The order is created to keep the flu from spreading.

Avian flu has been confirmed in a Lincoln County, Tennessee, breeder flock and in a Giles County, Tennessee, breeding operation, the Extension System said.

Vietnam's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) has just chose to suspend importing poultry and poultry-related products from the United States for fear of the bird flu outbreak.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture hasn't yet confirmed the Alabama findings, according to Lyndsay Cole, a spokeswoman for USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. No disease was found, and no further disease has been found in Tennessee.

This month's bird flu outbreak was the first in the more than a year. While avian flu, at present, is not a threat to human health, it can devastate commercial poultry operations resulting in huge financial losses.

"Aviagen immediately implemented additional risk mitigation biosecurity protocols including movement restrictions put in place on the farm", Robinson said.

Alabama's Department of Agriculture and Industries (ADAI) announced a stop movement for certain poultry. During this time, backyard flock owners should refrain from moving birds offsite or introducing new birds.

Large-scale commercial poultry is Alabama's largest crop and a $15 billion annual business. Rival poultry producer Sanderson Farms Inc. declined 2.4 percent and Pilgrim's Pride Corp. slid 1.5 percent. Cullman is the top broiler-producing county in the state, followed by DeKalb and Marshall counties, respectively.

The state estimates thousands of people around Alabama keep chickens. No affected poultry entered the food chain.

Ag officials said operators at the second premises were closely monitoring and regularly testing poultry for signs of avian influenza.
