IN job opening could make IL coaching search trickier

IN job opening could make IL coaching search trickier

So Izzo's reaction to the news that Crean was sacked after nine seasons as the head coach at IN on Thursday was understandable.

Crean was sacked by IN athletic director Fred Glass after posting an 18-16 record this season, a campaign that ended with an NIT loss at Georgia Tech earlier this week.

The move comes after the Hoosiers lost to Georgia Tech in the opening round of the NIT on Tuesday. Crean will leave with a 166-135 record overall with a 71-91 Big Ten mark.

IN lost its best defender, OG Anunoby, with a season-ending knee injury and their top scorer, James Blackmon Jr., for three games with a leg injury. He was also named the 2016 Big Ten Coach of the Year. Both teams were cold at the end; IN didn't make a field goal IN the final 4:19 of the half, and Georgia Tech was without a field goal for the final 2:33. Indiana Athletic Director Fred Glass heard those demands, and Thursday he acted.

"I think he's a very good coach, but evidentially the folks in IN don't". The 6-foot-6 senior hit back-to-back 3-pointers, then added a jumper on the following possession to stake the Illini to a 10-4 lead with 16:52 remaining in the first half. It felt like every other shot IN was taking they had Ben Lammers' hand contesting it.

IN also struggled away from home all year long, going just 2-8 in true road games and 2-3 in neutral site games during the regular season. However, that fifth banner came 30 years ago and it's been 15 years since the Hoosiers' last national title appearance. While I will not be establishing a formal search committee or advisory committee, I will consult with basketball experts from around the country and throughout the State of Indiana, including many former Indiana University basketball players.

"I couldn't say we had a solid relationship", Hunter said. You're talking about arguably the greatest "brand" anywhere on the planet, and we got things going at a very high level now and we're very excited about it. The fact it was the IN job could complicate Illinois' search. And, in the final two sentences of Glass's release announcing Crean's firing, it was made it clear that a return to that glorious past is the only acceptable outcome for whomever chooses to succeed him.

"The expectations for IU basketball are to perennially contend and win multiple Big Ten championships, regularly go deep into the NCAA Tournament and win our next national championship and more after that", Glass said. There were too many turnovers, a lack of strong defense and an absence of a true leader on the court. "We want somebody who's a proven recruiter, who has the ability and the desire to recruit in the Midwest, and especially in IN".
