Loan waiver: Devendra Fadnavis goes to Delhi with Sena ministers

Loan waiver: Devendra Fadnavis goes to Delhi with Sena ministers

Under pressure to announce a farm loan waiver, the Maharashtra government is looking at ways to boost agricultural output, help cultivators come out of debt trap and transfer subsidy directly in their bank accounts.

"The Congress-NCP government only gave out Rs 7,000 crore in packages for farmers, but in the past 30 months, we have given more than Rs 31,000 crore for farmers".

In his statement, Fadnavis clarified that in the state, the the actual amount to be waived is Rs 30,500 crore. "If government pays farmers, they will use the money to repay their debt.Just pass a one-line resolution that farmers loans will be waived off and Opposition parties will cooperate with the government in its functioning", Patil said.

When the chief minister said he'd take an allparty delegation to the central government to hold discussions on the matter, there was din in the house.

Opposition members today created ruckus in the Maharashtra Legislative Council over Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis' statements over the farm loan waiver issue.

As soon as the House assembled for the day and the Speaker called for the Question Hour, Shiv Sena legislators entered the Well demanding loan waiver. All these years, expenditure on agriculture investment was very less, he said adding that since his Government came to power, capital expenditure on agriculture and allied sector is Rs 19,434 crore. The Congress and NCP are shedding crocodile tears in the name of farmers. "Since the loan waiver of 2008-09, as many as 16,000 farmers have committed suicide". "The measures that we have initiated are aimed at taking the state's farm economy from debt to investment", Fadnavis said. Similarly, Rs 11,500 crore has been spent on crop insurance and assistance for natural calamities.

"Farmers became debt-ridden within a year of the loan waiver".

Fadnavis asked them that would they give a guarantee that after declaring a loan waiver, the farmers would not commit suicide. "On the contrary, a one-time loan waiver often leads to financial institutions denying farmers crop credit, which is more detrimental to their livelihood", he said. Thackeray had earlier said that the Shiv Sena would not let the government table the state budget until their demand of crop loan waiver was met.

Talking to media persons, leader of the Opposition in the State Assembly Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil charged that through his statement, the Chief Minister had tried to "mislead" the people.

Mungantiwar said post-GST implementation, the state will focus on increasing its non-tax revenue income. "So much so that the State Government is not ready to adopt a one-line resolution in the State Legislature urging the Centre to announce waiver of loans for the distressed farmers", he said.
