More than a third of Oregon's JC Penney stores slated to close

More than a third of Oregon's JC Penney stores slated to close

In a list released Friday, J.C. Penney said seven of its stores, all central and eastern part of the state will close. On Friday, the retailer unveiled a list of 138 stores that were on the chopping block.

The company said the closings will cause the loss of about 5,000 jobs. "Our decision to close stores will allow us to raise the overall brand standard of the Company and allocate capital more efficiently".

"J.C. Penney is in the process of identifying relocation opportunities within the company for esteemed leaders", the release said.

J.C. Penney officials say they estimate that 5,000 positions nationwide will be impacted by the closures, and that they will provide outplacement support for eligible associates impacted. The company has announced no plans to close its Greenville and Spartanburg stores.

A total of four South Dakota cities, Pierre, Mitchell, Yankton and Watertown, are slated to see their J.C. Penney stores close over the summer.

The Willmar J.C. Penney store, which also includes a hair salon, is one of two department stores that are anchor locations in the Kandi Mall. More than 130 other JCP stores are being closed across the country. It was not clear how many people are employed at the Berkshire Mall store.

JC Penney opened in IN in 1980, a year after the mall opened with the three other anchor stores. JCPenney operations in malls in Dublin, Macon, Milledgeville and Tifton, and at the Gateway Plaza in Tifton, will be closing in liquidation operations expected to begin on April 17, the company has announced.

J.C. Penney and other national retailers are struggling to adapt to a changing retail landscape.
